Wayne Gretzky Chardonnay, Niagara, Ontario
To continue our ‘Celebrity Vintners’ wine theme, we bring to you Wayne Gretzky’s Unoaked Chardonnay.
With a nickname of ‘The Great One’, it’s not that we think Mr. Gretzky needs much explanation, but here it goes anyway:
- Gretzky is known for wearing the #99 jersey on the hockey rink for the Edmonton Oilers
- After more than 10 years with the Oilers, he was then traded to the LA Kings, and as you can imagine, Canadians weren’t to happy about that!
- According to Wikipedia, he is the leading point-scorer in NHL history, with more assists than any other player has points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season – a feat he accomplished four times.
So, it’s clear that Gretzky was a star on the ice, but will his wine skill force us to give him an icy reception? (Seemed funnier when I said it in my head!)
The colour of Gretzky’s founders line Chardonnay appears as an extremely clear and light golden hue. On the nose, you’ll pick up hints of citrus, apricot, and green apple. On the palate, you’re greeted with refined acidity, a punch of citrus fruits and after notes of anise. All in all, a well rounded mouth feel that we’re sorry we didn’t take the time to explore on past balmy days. Gretzky’s Chardonnay is crisp, robust and yet light, compounded with bursting flavours. A truly enjoyable wine.
