To celebrate World Malbec Day appropriately, we decided to revel with the best of them, in a civilized way of course, at the LCBO Vintages Malbec World Day – Walk Around Tasting event. The Roy Thompson Hall, in downtown Toronto, was dressed with over 20 different wine and food stations to keep the attendees well nourished for the Malbec treck they had in front of them.
Usually, for World Malbed Day I would think it fit to go into the history of the wine, but I’ve already done that, and last I check once history is written it usually doesn’t change. So, this year I am sharing some of the notables from last nights Malbec event and while I did not get a chance to try them all, there were definate winners in our books, including some that were not… quite… Malbec’s, but still a representation of what the LCBO has to offer from Argentina.
Wines from the Vintages Malbec World Day Event- ranked as best as we could
Our standout wine for the evening
Algodon Bonarda 2008
Talk about heaven in your glass. I think I shamelessly went back, to the BND wine distributors, three times to try this and each time, brought a new crowd along with me. It’s robust, yet soft structure of complexity, holding with it tastes of dark cherry, plum, raspberry, and some smokiness. I can’t say enough about this wines smooth, medium length finish. This wine is not yet available at the LCBO, but it will be on June 8th, with an expected retail of $19.95.
Our “must get a bottle of this” mentions
