Island Five Cocktail Recipe

How did you celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Me, I spent the better part of the morning trying to come up with a mental cocktail ingredient list that would make any Cinco de Mayo celebrator proud.  In the end, the drink I came up with is something I am calling ‘The Island Five’; ‘Island’ because I used Appleton Rum and ‘Five’ clearly because of celebration translates to May 5.  Very simple I know, but hey…

The Island Five Cocktail Recipe Cinco de Mayo cocktail ingredients

What you’ll need

  • 1/2 of a lemon
  • 1 lime
  • 2 oz of Tequila
  • 1 oz of dark Rum
  • ginger honey
  • ginger beer
  • sweetened grapefruit drink (you can substitute any other kind of refreshing juice here and though it won’t taste the exact same, it will still be a damn good drink)
  • 4 mint leaves
  • 1 cocktail shaker

  • Add ice to your cocktail shaker
  • Then add your 2 oz of Tequila and your 1 oz of rum
  • Take your 1/2 lemon and squeeze the juice from it, into your cocktail shaker
  • Take your lime and cut one slice for garnish and then squeeze the juice from the remaining part of lime into your cocktail shaker.
  • Add 1 tbsp of ginger honey and stir it into the contents of the cocktail shaker for 20 seconds or so
  • Add 1/2 a cup of ginger beer
  • Add 1/2 a cup of your grapefruit drink
  • Put the lid on your cocktail shaker and shake until you feel the entire shaker has an even  cool feeling to it
  • Pour into the cocktail glass closest to you (I am not picky really) and garnish with your lime and 2 mint leaves

Take my word for it, these Island Five’s were a hit at our impromptu Cinco de Mayo gathering.  The amounts above are enough for two cocktails.
