One of the things that excites me about Chianti Classico is that the region itself is so robust that often  what you think you know about this wine goes out the window when you try another of the same designation. Only the pros that can pickup, where one vineyard is in relation to the next, will have the upper hand in this game. So, with this in mind, I ventured to try Granaio Chianti Classico 2011 DOCG.  The wine-makers at Fattorie Melini chose to make this Chianti Classico from 90% Sangiovese and 10% mixed varietals.

On colour, this wine holds a rich ruby red hue.  On the nose, the Granaio Chianti Classico 2011 possesses many of the things you’d expect from this wine type, floral notes of lavender, cherry and with a twist of some herb.  On the palate, you’ll find this wine transforms mid initial consumption. At the front of the mouth, you sense a burst of tannins, cherry,  green pepper and in the end you pick up delightful hints of vanilla.

The Granaio Chianti Classico stands to be a great staple wine from this varietal and one that we will again for the purpose of entertaining friends who are into a mid bodied red wine.

This wine retails at the LCBO for $19.95
